July 2019 End of Watch Monthly Update

June 2019 - 14 Officers Down

Summer is officially here and I hope everyone is enjoying it relaxing by the pool or at a beach somewhere. For law enforcement across the country, June has been one of the roughest/worst so far this year.

Current information indicates 14 officers down for the month of June. While we often lose officers to incredible odds in “hot call” situations, sometimes we lose an officer to a seemingly normal or calm situation. Two instances stand out in my mind and involve Police Officer Michael Langsdorf and Trooper William Moden.

Trooper Moden was simply checking on some motorist who had been in an accident when he was struck by a vehicle. Officer Langsdorf responded to a call in reference to a man trying to cash a fraudulent check when the suspect unexpectedly opened fire on him.

From past experience, neither of these types of calls are the kind of calls that put us on high alert. They are commonly referred to “paper calls” and are rather routine. This type of mindset on calls can cause you to let your guard down. Please, remain vigilant no matter the situation you are responding to because no matter how predictable a situation may be, the future is never certain.

To my brothers and sisters out there still on watch, please keep a sharp eye and your head on a swivel. Remember that while we do have lots of support from the general community, there are people out there who are not on our side and simply want to set us up for failure. Do not give them the room to succeed in trying to trip you up. Semper Paratus.

If you would like to join us in our mission to honor the fallen officers simply throw some weight in a ruck and go for a walk. The suggested minimum weight is 20 pounds to match the average weight in duty gear an officer carries on a daily basis and ruck one mile for each officer down. If you are a beginner, don’t worry you don’t have to do all the miles at once.
